![]() ![]() Sometimes you’ll get a devil in the row which will deduct points from you, unless you get lucky and a cupid appears to block him. This is Slingo at its most basic level, but there are many twists to the formula.įor starters, you can randomly get jokers in the bottom row which allow you to choose any number in the column to clear, or super jokers which let you clear any number on the entire board. You’re given 20 pulls of the lever to accomplish this task, with the ultimate goal of racking up a high score and completely clearing the board of numbers. The task is to match each number from the bottom row with one from the corresponding column above it. Each game starts with a 5 x 5 board of randomly set numbers, with a row of five numbers along the bottom that changes with each “pull” of the lever, like a slot machine. In essence, it’s exactly what the name implies – a mixture of slots and bingo. There’s a lot going on in Slingo Supreme, but I’ll do my best to sum it up for those not familiar with the game. The game evolved a lot since the first release from 1995, and Slingo Supreme for iPhone is based on the PC game of the same name from 2008. I remember the game from back then, but somehow managed never to have played it until this iPhone iteration. Many gamers will probably remember playing Slingo on AOL back when your 28.8k modem was the hotness. Near Hoan Kiem Lake, Thang Long Water Puppet Theater is a familiar address for those wanting to enjoy water puppet shows and discover the beauty of this unique Vietnamese traditional art. Is a recurrent and the most notable character in water puppetry. The shows recount Vietnamese folk tales and legends with topics including the celebration of the rice harvest depicted in a humorous fashion, agricultural production, animal husbandry, entertainment activities like wrestling and even the heroic examples of national heroes such as Ba Trung, Ba Trieu and Tran Hung Dao.Ĭhú Tễu (“chú” means uncle, man, boy or Mr. There are also Vietnamese operatic songs telling the story that is being acted out by the puppets. A Vietnamese orchestra plays traditional music using drums, wooden bells, horns, bamboo flutes and cymbals. The puppets perform classic Vietnamese folk tales and stories, and the performances are accompanied by traditional music. The puppeteers manipulate the puppets with wires and poles with simple or complex tables, pile systems, word rods and bamboo poles. Water puppets are made of lightweight wood such as figs and vines (which are readily available around the ponds) and painted with resinous paint. These puppeteers train for at least three years before they get up on or into the – as it were – stage to entertain their viewers. The theater has also brought water puppetry to more than 40 foreign countries through performance tours, or international cultural exchange programs and puppetry festivals.Ī show typically features 7-11 skilled puppeteers working in harmony with one another to create magic on stage. About 500 shows are performed in front of approximately 150,000 people every year. The first modern water puppet shows were performed by Thang Long Theater artists in 1990. The typical themes of a water puppet show are still deeply rooted in rural Vietnamese traditions that include fishing, planting and harvesting of rice as well as village folklore. The heart of the show hasn’t changed to this day, only the setting and the locations. It is also said that the shows were not originally intended solely to entertain rice farmers but also as a way to keep mystical spirits amused so that they would not cause mischief. At first, the water puppet shows were only held outdoors with the stage placed in a vast space under the sky. The original water puppet shows were performed in rice paddies around the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam. ![]() Water puppetry dates back about 1,000 years ago to the Ly Dynasty. "People who don't have a well-regulated circadian rhythm are more likely to suffer from cognitive deficits like poor focus, inhibited learning, and reduced memory consolidation," Rohrscheib explains. Some studies have found that people who go to bed late and have trouble waking up in the morning are more likely to have a shortened lifespan, in addition to a much higher risk of psychological disorders and diabetes. "Not waking up early enough in the morning and not getting the sun exposure that you require to maintain your circadian rhythm is associated with difficulty falling and staying asleep, and can impact your health." "Sleeping before midnight helps to ensure that you have enough daytime hours of light exposure to regulate your melatonin production," Rohrscheib says. In addition to regulating circadian rhythm, sleep before midnight can affect our overall wellness when awake. "When we cross time zones, this process is disrupted," describes sleep expert and researcher Nerina Ramlakhan, PhD, physiologist, sleep expert, and author of The Little Book of Sleep: The Art of Natural Sleep. The longer we stay awake after this point, the more we shake up our natural sleep cycle. Generally, this melatonin signal occurs well before midnight. Rohrscheib says that as it gets darker in the evening, and less light information enters our eyes, our melatonin production increases until it reaches a certain threshold, at which point it signals to the brain that it's time for sleep. Melatonin is a hormone that sends a signal to your body to sleep. RELATED: Sleep Procrastination Might Be Stealing Precious Hours of Rest From You-Here's How to Stop It "Light entering our eyes makes the brain suppress melatonin, one of the main hormones that regulate sleep." It helps maintain all aspects of our lives. Without circadian rhythm, we aren't able to optimize how much energy our bodies expend and when. This ingrained behavior has been present for thousands and thousands of years and is shaped by the earth's rotation on its axis. It regulates our sleep while also signaling when to be alert and when to become sleepy based on light changes in our environment, like sunrises and sunsets.
